I recommend you watch the Prada fall 2021 womenswear collection stream twice. First, of course, with your eyes open, taking in the clunky platform shoes, the sensual sequins, the intimately clutched wraps. Now watch it again, this time with headphones on and your eyes closed. Just trust me!

The shadows of the models passing through Rem Koolhaas’s furry rooms, loitering a second too long in the thresholds between spaces, and breaking into strange dance sequences might linger in your mind. The longer you keep your eyes shut, the longer you might start to imagine yourself in some back corner of the Fondazoine Prada complex on the outskirts of Milan, or some other elegantly industrial place, dancing wildly, the star of your own movie about sex and freedom and fashion. 

Richie Hawtin is the man responsible for this transportive and effective Prada soundtrack. Under the alias of Plastikman he is one of the most prolific electronic musicians of the past three decades. When Raf Simons joined Miuccia Prada as co-creative director last year, he brought along Hawtin, an old friend, to create the music that accompanies Prada’s Fashion Week films.

Hawtin’s original music is a change for both Simons and Prada, who previously worked with Michel Gaubert and Frédéric Sanchez, respectively, on musical collages for their shows. This new chapter of Prada required a new vibe, and Hawtin was happy to collaborate, for the first time, with a fashion company. Vogue Runway called him up just minutes after he appeared in a livestreamed conversation between Mrs. Prada, Simons, Marc Jacobs, Lee Daniels, Rem Koolhaas, and Hunter Schafer after the fall 2021 show.
